Living in an RV has taught me to be cautious about what we bring into our home. In 2014 I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, an autoimmune disease that attacks your thyroid. I immediately started searching for safe and clean personal care products I could use along with my medication.
It took years to finally find the right medication and dose that worked for me, but what mattered from that point forward was finding safe and clean personal care products that wouldn’t impact my endocrine system. It is terrifying that many of the deemed “safe” products on your local store’s shelf haven’t been tested for human use. Even worse, many of those products have been found to be endocrine disruptors.
I stopped dying my hair, changed the shampoo and conditioner I use and immediately started the search for clean and safe makeup. The search has been long and filled with trial and error. Many of the makeups that I found were marketed as organic, but when I examined the ingredients I found that they weren’t.
Once I had Landyn the search became even more important. It was no longer just about me. I needed to find safe and clean products to use on him. From his lotion to baby cream, I wanted to be certain what I was using on his skin was safe.
Then Came Beautycounter!
Recently, I stumbled upon Beautycounter when searching the Environmental Working Group (EWG) database. I have been using the EWG Skindeep database for years and trust them and their research. When I read the Beautycounter was certified by the EWG I was sold. Finally, a company that cares about my family’s health, and that of every consumer!
I quickly learned I would need to order from a consultant. I found a fellow RVer named Lindsay from Follow Your Detour and got in touch to place an order. Once it arrived I tested the products to make sure they would work for me. About a week in I knew I wanted to share this with others. These are the products I have been searching for since 2014!
I became a consultant, and I am so happy I did. I have been able to both get a discount on my favorite safe and clean products and help others do the same.
My Favorite Safe and Clean Personal Care Products
Without further introduction here are my favorite safe and clean personal care items! These are from a variety of brands, not just Beautycounter.
Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion
First, we have my favorite moisturizer. Most “natural” moisturizes I have tried are very heavy and greasy. I have tried probably 8 different ones. I even tried to make my own. (That was a terrible idea, by the way.)
I now use Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion. I love that no matter what climate we are in this moisturizer can do it all. I love that it truly adapts and is light and not greasy.
Dr. Bronners All-purpose Soap
Next up is my favorite all-purpose soap. Dr. Bronners is one of the first safe and clean products I bought.
This has a variety of uses. I use it as a hand soap, dish soap, and I clean my makeup brushes with it. I have even used it as shampoo (though I found it doesn’t fair well in hard water).
It comes in a giant bottle or in bars. I personally love the baby unscented Dr. Bronners.
Beautycounter Kids Bath Collection
Next up is Landyn’s favorite shampoo, conditioner and body wash! It’s Tear-free too!
It is the Beautycounter Kids Bath Collection. I sometimes steal Landyn’s body wash because it smells so good. It is safe and clean! Before we bought this I was using EO 3 in 1 Shampoo, Bath and Body Wash but it wasn’t tear-free.
Everyone 3-In-1 Soap, Lavender and Aloe
The Everyone brand also makes my top favorites list. They have a great 3-in-1 line and are also certified by the EWG!
If you are looking to keep things super simple in an RV this is a great buy and it is a BIG bottle! They also have a variety of scents that are fragranced with essential oils like Beautycounter.
I personally didn’t like this much as a shampoo but as a body wash it is great!
Volume and Shape Collection from Beautycounter
Next up is my favorite shampoo and conditioner, the Volume and Shape Collection from Beautycounter. It’s what I have been searching my whole life for. Seriously.
I have incredibly thick, straight hair that can quickly become lifeless. The Volume and Shape Collection gives it the volume it needs and deserves. Best of all, it does it without me having to use a ton of product.
Most shampoos I have tried that are on the safe and clean side took 2-3 washes to get my hair feeling good. I use a small quarter sized dab of the shampoo and conditioner and my hair is silky soft! If volume and shape aren’t what you need you can also check out the Smooth and Control Collection or the Daily Shampoo and Conditioner Collection.
Nature’s Gate Natural Toothpaste
Next up is toothpaste. Toothpaste can hide some nasty junk in it.
I switched Nature’s Gate Natural Toothpaste Without Flouride years ago and have stuck with it.
Natural toothpaste will take a little getting used to for some since it doesn’t suds up like your typical toothpaste. But once you know you are keeping chemicals from your body it is an easy thing to get used to.
Josh has sensitive teeth and has found that it works for him too, even though it is not marketed for that.
Crystal Body Deoderant Roll-on
Deodorant is another product that you will find heavy metals in. I don’t know about you but I don’t want any heavy metals like aluminum anywhere near my armpits!
This was another switch I made very quickly. I use the Unscented Crystal Mineral Deodorant. There are many options out there for safer deodorants, but I found many contain baking soda. They irritate my skin so I can’t use them. This one is gentle on my skin and gets the job done.
Countermatch Adaptive Body Lotion from Beautycounter
I didn’t really understand having a good lotion until we wintered in northern New Mexico. Josh, Landyn and I all desperately needed one!
I used to think my thyroid levels were off when my skin would get really dry. Now I know it is often due to the climate we are traveling in. I got the Countermatch Adaptive Body Lotion as a perk and now it is on my list of items that I can never be without!
Josh also has very dry skin. The skin on his feet and knuckles crack in dry environments. He used to only use Aveeno lotion, but I after much prodding he gave Countermatch Adaptive Body Lotion a try. After using it once he said he can never go back! His cracked skin would start healing with one application of the Adaptive Body Lotion; something that Aveeno took days to do.
Other Skin-care Products
Countermatch works wonders for me, but there are other options too! Be sure to check out my personal Beautycounter site to see your options. There is even a skincare quiz to help you find your perfect match!
